City Guidelines Regarding the Installation of On-Street Disabled Parking Signs
Traffic Services Division of the Department of Public Works
Governing Document Reference:
Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD), 2009 or latest edition and the Overland Park Municipal Code 12.04.
MUTCD Requirements:
“Disabled Parking” (R7-8) signs are intended to be used for parking spaces that are reserved for persons with disabilities. Where parking spaces that are reserved for persons with disabilities are designated to accommodate wheelchair vans, a “Van Accessible” (R7-8P) plaque shall be mounted below the R7-8 sign.
City of Overland Park Guidelines for Installation: Upon receiving a request for a disabled parking space an engineering study will be initiated. Requests will be approved by the City Traffic Engineer. To be considered for approval the following conditions must be met.
- The requestor must provide documentation that a Disabled Parking permit has been issued by the State of Kansas.
- The road on which the disabled parking space is requested is classified as a residential street.
- Traffic flow on the road on which the disabled parking space is requested will not be hindered.
- The approval of the disabled parking space will not put the City in a position such that work, other than the signing of the space, must be done to comply with ADA requirements.
The request should include enough information to determine if the sign will be for a passenger car or for a van. Disabled parking spaces will be granted for a period of one year. To remain in effect, the requestor must provide a request for extension. The request must be in writing, must include documentation of a valid Disabled Parking permit, and must be received before the start of the new calendar year.
Signing Standards:
The “Disabled Parking” (R7-8) sign shall have a green legend and border and a white wheelchair symbol on a blue square, all on a white retro-reflectorized background. The sign shall be 12” x 18” in size. The “Van Accessible” (R7-8P) plaque shall have a green legend and border on a white retro-reflectorized background. The plaque shall be 18” x 9” in size.
